This is a video talking about how we as women are taught to interpret what we see and why we compete to get what we want. It is interesting to think about these ideas in relation to past and present women writers
it has been speculated that Jane ANger may have been written by a man. It is not known with certaintiy if Jane Anger was a real person or psedomum to protect he writer. It is interesting how she, i believe it was a woman, was able to take the typical readings of teh biblical passages and reinterpret them to suit her arguments. Her ability to use the common argument against women and turn them around to support women et do it in a way to not draw to much critism. She was able to challenge the boundaries set out by society for women and question the validity of the g belief of the woman as subordinate to the man.
Margery Kempe regardless of what you think about her crying and weeping was a strong person personally who believed in her convictions so much she risked being burnt as a heretic, was arrested numereous times for lollardy and suffered extreme hardships. She was a woman ahead of her time making pilgrimiges to Holy sites on her own, that is without her husband, or any family to protect her on her journeys. She left wealth and power behind in pursuit of her service to God. She left behind her husband, children and parents.
It is commonly believed now that after her first pregnancy she suffered from post partum depression and it is curious how in her later years she’cured’ another woman from the same malady.
I admire the strength she had to believe in her service to God so much she went against convention and societal norms, even for today, she would have been riduculed for leaving her children and husband to travel around the world.
Her husband was also extremely ahead of his time. ‘Allowing’ his wife to do wha she wanted he would have been labelled a cuckold possibly and definitely his honor as a man questioned especially when it was learned he agreed to a vow of chastity. The stigmatisatioin he would have suffered as a result of her travels would have been emense. He could have made her stay at home and be a wife but didn’t even going so far as at the beginning to travel with her.
I truely admire her dedication to God and her ability to travel all over with no means of support and having her way paid by good people along her journey and the faith that it would happen.
Her belief in her journey’s to have them written down and to find someone willing to do it for her not once but twice because the first one died in the process and losing her son and husband in the same year but carried on— her strength and beliefs were more than we could imagine.
Margery Kempe was a visionary who went against all conventions to pursue her beliefs and leave an indelable mark on us.
After many pain staking hours I am finally having some success in getting my blog started and posted..
